Animals and biodiversity for young explorers
When Rome’s zoological garden was founded at the beginning of the last century, in 1911, it was immediately recognized by visitors as one of the most enchanting places in the city.
A wonderful zoological garden located in the heart of Rome, within Villa Borghese, home to around 200 animal species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians from all over the world: among them Sumatran tigers, lions, bears, orangutans, Komodo dragons, chimpanzees, and ring-tailed lemurs.
Among its most remarkable areas are the Great Aviary, built in stainless steel with a geodesic structure that allows even larger birds to enjoy long flights, and the Reptile House, which recreates an open-air tropical environment featuring waterfalls, trees, and a rainforest setting. Both were designed in the 1930s by architect Raffaele De Vico.
Bioparco di Roma also features a rich botanical collection. Originally composed mainly of Mediterranean species, the park has been enriched with hundreds of exotic plants since its founding in 1911. Visitors can admire rare specimens such as Araucaria bidwillii and Liriodendron tulipifera, as well as several palm species including Phoenix dactylifera, Phoenix reclinata, Butia capitata, and Jubaea chilensis.
The Bioparco offers a unique opportunity to experience wild and unexpected nature right in the center of Rome—a city renowned for its extraordinary historical, artistic, and cultural heritage. Across its 17 hectares, visitors can enjoy a variety of leisure and educational spaces, including cafés, bookstores, restaurants, and the Lake Oasis, a 1,200-square-meter green area featuring an artificial lake, picnic spaces, and outdoor playgrounds.
There are many ways to explore the park, on foot, aboard a small train, on a golfcart and through a variety of themed routes. But imagine entering this extraordinary place alongside a naturalist biologist and discovering all of its secrets from the comfort of a golf cart. Thanks to Family Express, this is now possible!
